In white, text says how geography influences ROI. There is a hand with a stylus and dashboards on a screen to the left.

Bachelor’s degrees lead to strong earnings gains, yet too many graduates struggle to find good jobs.

In a new video, Vice President of Research Nichole Torpey-Saboe shares that when we go beyond a focus on average earnings or median income, we learn much more about how likely a bachelor’s degree is to pay off for an individual.

“These data do tell us that most people do have a positive outcome from higher education, but not all,” Torpey-Saboe said. “So it’s important to look beyond the average to see who is getting a positive outcome and how we can ensure more people are getting access to economic mobility.”

The video includes graphics from a new Strada report, “Beyond the Average: The Uneven Geography of College ROI.”

The Principles for Quality Education-to-Career Guidance, released in 2024, were developed by a Strada-convened advisory group of experts from postsecondary education, nonprofit organizations, and workforce development organizations. They came together to identify the practices, services, and resources that are key to supporting students through a successful transition through education and into careers.

Since the Principles were released, they have been endorsed by a coalition of more than two dozen national organizations representing postsecondary institutions, college and career success programs, and secondary schools.

Now Strada researchers have conducted a systematic literature review of the research behind each of the five Principles. These downloadable resources can inform the practice of education-to-career guidance and help practitioners build the case for continued investment.
